The teen-aged main character, telling his story in first person, is very funny and charming. The mystery in the story is solved rather rapidly at the end of the book, and seemed a little far-fetched for a hero of that young age. It was almost an afterthought, as the most appealing part of the book is the musings of this "old-fashioned" teenager in 1950. Reminiscent of Nancy Drew mysteries, I think this most would mostly appeal to young adults.Product details

What The Barber Knew edition by Bailey Herrington Bryce Herrington Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
If you are looking for blood spattered on the wall, steamy sex in faraway places or space dwarfs that invade the planet, don't read this. If you are a fan of science fiction, fantasy, and tough detectives, this story is not for you. There is no violence, no foul language, no unbelievable character, and no violent sex. If, on the other hand, you want to read a fetching good story about a baseball playing teenage boy with active sexual hormones, who happens onto a murder victim, and who then finds himself in the middle of a big mystery, then this story is for you.
Set in post-war Erie Pa, the story our hero, David Elliot, tells will keep you smiling even as David finds himself pulled into real danger. Bailey Herrington's first book, published as an ebook, creates a character that we want to hear more about. David Elliot is the quintessential American teenager of the early 1950s, a boy whose hormones are humming faster than the baseballs thrown at him by his buddies. He is growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, a city populated with ethnic types that Herrington obviously knows well. Herrington nails his descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of this small city, and nails the dialogue of the characters that inhabit the place.
When David and his girl friend, herself the perfect fantasy of every teenage boy in the 1950s, find a murder victim, the mystery starts to unfold. We follow Dave as he connects the dots, getting himself deeper and deeper into trouble and danger, and we admire the manner in which Dave handles himself throughout. Told with humor and yes, charm, this story brings a light touch to a gruesome crime.
This is a great read for someone looking for a page turner that can be finished in one sitting. A convincing plot, realistic characters, good descriptions with a little mystery thrown in. Who could ask for anything more?
I think you will want more of this.
What a fun read! It's hard to believe that Bailey Herrington hasn't been published before now. His attention to detail, of the era and location, is spot on. You can feel the heat radiating from the summer sidewalks and smell the Lake Erie breezes! The main character, David Elliot, is the perfect storyteller with his youthful point of view, exploring what's important to a seventeen year old boy as well as being driven by a strong set of values. Ultimately, when confronted with life's curveballs, he steps up and goes yard!
Repeat after me.... Sequel!
As a baby boomer I just loved the nostalgic 50's feel of Bailey Herrington's book. Refreshing and well crafted read.

If this is his first published book, I am really looking forward to what Bailey Herrington comes up with next.
This is a refreshing voice in the mystery genre. David Elliott, the hero, is so authentic. He IS a teenaged boy of the 1950's. What he does, what he eats, his fights with his brother and sister and what he thought of world topics all evoke the age and pull the reader along in the story. The action moves briskly and soon we find ourselves a bit worried about what is going to happen next. But David keeps plugging along on his quest for the truth, except, perhaps when he has to tell his parents what he is doing.
You will enjoy reading "What the Barber Knew" and will be asking for more.
