An Ariadne French Mystery. Cozy soft-boiled mystery set in Marfa, Texas, among the Marfa Mystery Lights and a cast of eccentrics. Gentle humor in the style of Joan Hess, Donna Andrews, and especially Anne George's "Southern Sisters" mysteries. Ariadne French and her older sister Zoe are co-sleuths in this suspenseful tale. Ari's long-time boyfriend leaves to build them a log cabin in Montana--but then she loses touch with him. His cell phone is disconnected and there's no forwarding address. A call from Marfa, Texas, comes to tell her that Aaron is dead under suspicious circumstances and that she's his sole heir. Traveling to help clear up his estate, Ari encounters oddball eccentrics and a crazy town that trades on its fame as the home of the Marfa Mystery Lights. Ari's not a believer until the Lights chase her and her guide (a mystical Native American lawyer) through the desert one night. Still, the suspects in Aaron's death are purely human. Aaron had developed a new public-key encryption scheme twice as fast as the ones currently in use, and several corporations had been negotiating to license it. The source code is missing--and Ari believes that when she finds it (he must have backed it up somewhere, knowing Aaron), she'll find Aaron's murderer. Can she and her sister find the code and the killer--without the killer getting to them first?

Murder by the Marfa Lights An Ariadne French Mystery Denise Weeks 9781478185512 Books

A terrific mystery with engaging characters, an intriguing plot and a load of surprises! When Ari (Ariadne) goes to Marfa, Texas, to settle Aaron's estate, she has no idea what she'll encounter. Nothing is what it seems in Marfa, including the Marfa Lights. Are they real? Are they supernatural? Ari finds herself fascinated by the lights--and who could blame her? After reading this mystery, I find myself longing to visit Marfa. Ari (and her sister, Zoe, who arrives to help her,) finds that Aaron's death might not be as straightforward as it seems. A whole cast of zany Texas characters descend on Ari. Aaron seems to have had a complicated life and Gil, the preacher, befriends Ari and gives her some background information.. A fun, roller coaster of a ride. I didn't want it to end. If there is a sequel, I will snap it up in a heartbeat.

Murder by the Marfa Lights An Ariadne French Mystery Denise Weeks 9781478185512 Books Reviews

Denise Weeks is a reader's treasure, and this book proves it. I've spent lots of time in Marfa, and this book nails the elusive charm of the far west Texas town. There's some paranormal elements in the story, but then there are in Marfa as well! Ari, the heroine, is particularly well drawn. She's human, with all attendant strengths, foibles and weaknesses, and you can understand - though not necessarily agree with - her actions. All the supporting characters, especially her slightly daffy sister, are equally well created. I'd know these people if I ran into them on the street. The mystery is superbly drawn and has a logical conclusion - enough said; I don't want to say anything more for fear of spoiling your pleasure in reading it. I can't wait for the next Ariadne French book!
MURDER BY THE MARFA LIGHTS is a richly diverse mystery, set in the colorful West Texas town of Marfa. The name may be familiar to film buffs who know it was where James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson shot much of the location footage of 1955's blockbuster movie, GIANT. Others know Marfa as an oasis of gentrification in the middle of nowhere, and even more equate it with a recurring phenomenon known as the Marfa Lights.

Author Denise Weeks, who knows her Texas and how to spin a gripping, multilevel tale, chose Marfa as the center of the investigation that her lead character, Ariadne French, launches following sudden news that her fiancé, a computer whiz with big plans for their future, has died there under highly suspicious circumstances.

Ms. Weeks' book is crowded with a mix of characters one might expect to encounter in a place like Marfa a glib preacher man who says he was Aaron's friend and spiritual adviser, several women whose interest in her man could well have been in him--or the money and property he seems to have come into, a smooth-talking musician who we believe has other plans for this attractive stranger, assorted family members whose motives may be emotional or greedy, a mystical Apache lawyer and his solitary-dwelling friend, who keeps a pet wolf, grows high-grade marijuana, and is somehow involved with human trafficking.

Ari has but one true ally her sister Zoe, just recovering from the loss of her son. As they expand their investigation, a sub-population of exotic fish, rare insects and spiders begins playing a role in the constantly-evolving plot. And, adding to the bizarre world the sisters are in, there are events providing both distraction and frustration, everything from a prosaic chili cook-off (well, it starts out that way) to an attack by the Marfa Lights themselves...and several attempts on Ari's life.

Denise Weeks threads everything together, producing a highly visual, beautifully-paced classic mystery novel. It is deep and complex, part whodunit and part social document, always entertaining, spiced with witty repartée, flashes of evil, a balance of romance and some people's good sides...and, when the smoke clears, a credible, strong denouement that conjures up memories of how a proper mystery novel should be wrought.

A highly recommended buy! This is one you'll likely read more than once, and sure to lead you to other fine books by this talented young woman.
"Home of the Marfa Mystery Lights? Artist' colony in the haunted desert? Travel destination of woo-woo seekers and True Believers?"

"Where exactly is this cabin? Did you get more details from Peter Pan than just 'second start on the right then straight on until the gas gauge shrieks'?"

Yes, Marfa, Texas is where Ariadne French goes when she learns her fiance Aaron has died and left her executor of his estate and his literary executor for the book he's been writing. Once there she finds a postcard Aaron addressed to her and he writes that things are whack there and tells her he needs her to come right away. So when she's told Aaron died of a heart attack she doesn't buy it. Something seems fishy and it's not just the aquariums built into the walls of every room in Aaron's cabin.

On her website the author, Brenda Weeks describes MARFA LIGHTS as a "a soft-boiled traditional mystery with a touch of the supernatural and humor in the vein of Joan Hess, Donna Andrews, and (in the sisters' relationship) the late Anne George's Southern Sisters mysteries."

As Ariadne begins to investigate Aaron's death, she finds out more about him. Though he had gone to build a cabin and then send for her, instead, he racked up huge debt on her credit cards, in fact, it's even worse than she expected, and he also got involved with another woman. Ariadne French considers that woman, who seems to be a con artist, as well as the preacher, Gill, who is much too nice, as suspects. Actually, there are several suspects in this small town filled with kooky characters.

The setting of Marfa Texas adds a lot of ambiance to the story. Ariadne has two sightings and experiences with the Marfa Lights, one is especially weird and spectacular.

The writing is smooth and witty and I found Ariadne to be a strong, fleshed out character that I liked a great deal. I greatly enjoyed this mystery and look forward to reading more in the series.
